Apprenticeships at Plant Steyr.

Electrical engineering.

Electricians are responsible for set-up, maintenance and optimisation of production equipment. An important sub-area is control technology, which requires extensive knowledge of electrical and electronic systems. Technical understanding, structured and analytical thinking and a good command of English are required.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS APPRENTICESHIP:

  • Good command of English.
  • Interest in technology, especially production using pneumatic, hydraulic and electronically-controlled systems.
  • Good understanding of design and functioning of technical equipment, flexibility, ability to work in a team and communications skills.
  • Logical thinking, with a systematic, structured approach to problem-solving.
  • School-leaving certificate (“Qualifizierter Hauptschulabschluss).

Automotive engineering.

To develop and build our engines, we need all-round experts with a broad range of knowledge. The relationship between individual engine components and their functions is a central challenge. State-of-the-art technical elements, such as mechanics, electrics and electronics, are the main themes of this apprenticeship. In addition to analytical activities, the focus is also on functional testing and quality assurance.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS APPRENTICESHIP:

  • Interest in all areas of automotive engineering, as well as testing and measurement equipment.
  • Technical skills, attention to detail, patience, good physical condition.
  • Enjoys learning as part of production and assembly teams and repair and development departments.
  • Good technical understanding, logical thinking, ability to grasp new ideas quickly.
  • Manual dexterity; good with figures/calculations.

Mechanical engineering.

The work of the mechanical engineering technician ranges from production to set-up to maintenance of technical systems. The focus is on control engineering (pneumatics, hydraulics, electro-pneumatics and electro-hydraulics). Qualifications such as technical understanding and manual dexterity are needed, as well as personal skills, such as the ability to work independently, willingness to take responsibility and cooperation skills.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS APPRENTICESHIP.

  • Good grades in physics; interest in mechanical and systems engineering.
  • Understanding of construction and functioning of technical equipment; technical skills, especially for work requiring attention to detail.
  • Flexibility, visual thinking, precision and stamina.
  • Good with figures – for example, calculating area and volumes.
  • School-leaving certificate (“Qualifizierter Hauptschulabschluss).

Development opportunities: Dedicated apprentices may continue their education to qualify as a foreperson or technician or become an engineer through “second-chance education”.

Mechatronics.

Mechatronics experts specialise in setting up, servicing and optimising production equipment. The training covers all relevant areas of technology and provides state-of-the-art know-how in the fields of electrics, pneumatics, hydraulics and joining technology, as well as metalworking (both manual and mechanical). In addition to technical understanding and manual dexterity, English skills are also required.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS APPRENTICESHIP:

  • Good command of English.
  • Interest in technology, especially production using pneumatic, hydraulic and electronically-controlled systems.

Machining.

Machining technicians generally use computer-controlled milling machines or drilling and machining centres to produce precision-parts made of metals and plastics. This mainly involves milling, but may also include lathing and drilling using conventional and CNC-controlled machines. This work requires technical understanding and good visual thinking.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS APPRENTICESHIP:

  • Aptitude for mathematics and physics.
  • Interest in modern computer-controlled machines and metal-processing techniques.
  • Enjoys precise work with metals and non-metals, with the manual skills needed to perform this work accurately.
  • Visual thinking, ability to work with technical drawings and good understanding of function and design of technical equipment also very important.
  • School-leaving certificate (“Qualifizierter Hauptschulabschluss).

Are you interested in an apprenticeship at BMW Group Plant Steyr, but not sure which is the right occupation for you? During our practical work-experience days, you’ll have the chance to spend two to three days learning more about the apprenticeship you’re interested in.

REQUIRED INTERNSHIP FOR SCHOOL PUPILS.

Different jobs and areas of work are waiting to be discovered – giving you chance to build on what you have learned in a work setting. In line with your school’s curriculum, you will get a taste of working in commercial or technical divisions, or in company catering, during the summer months (June to September).

The application phase for all required internships in commercial and technical departments begins in early October, several months before the start date. We regret that we are no longer accepting applications for required internships in commercial and technical departments for summer 2017.

Designed for: Pupils (secondary technical school (HTL), HAK, HLW or technical school) who need to complete a required internship as part of their curriculum.

Minimum age: 16 (at start of internship).

The application phase for required internships in company catering begins in early October, several months before the start date. We regret that we are no longer accepting applications for required internships in company catering for summer 2017.

Designed for: Pupils (at a higher vocational college specialising in gastronomy, tourism or home economics, or at technical schools) who need to complete a required internship as part of their curriculum.

Minimum age: 16 (at start of internship).

HELP WITH YOUR HTL (SECONDARY TECHNICAL SCHOOL) DISSERTATION.

Work experience brings benefits.

We will provide appropriate technical support while you write your secondary technical school (HTL) dissertation with us during the summer months (June to September), based on the practical experience you have gained with our company.

The application phase for all secondary technical school (HTL) dissertations begins in early October, several months before the start date. We regret that we are no longer accepting applications for dissertations in 2017. 

Designed for: Pupils at a secondary technical school (HTL) who need to write a dissertation as part of their curriculum.

Minimum age: 16.

Summer jobs.

What does a BMW Group plant look like from the inside? During the summer months (June to September), you can take a look behind the scenes at one of Austria’s largest industrial companies. A holiday job provides valuable insights into processes and operations at the BMW Group’s largest engine plant and diesel engine competence centre.

The application phase for all summer jobs begins in early October, several months before the start date. We regret that we are no longer accepting applications for summer 2017.

Summer jobs (production).

Summer jobs entail challenging and interesting activities on the assembly and production lines or in logistics. In this way, you are directly involved in building the “heart” of BMW and MINI cars.

Summer jobs (non-production).

If you are looking to build on what you have learned at school with practical experience in non-production areas, we also offer summer jobs in commercial and technical areas.
